France refuses to extradite former Georgian defense minister

France has refused to extradite former Defense Minister Davit Kezerashvili to Georgia.

Kezerashvili is charged with acquiring a large amount of money and for receiving a bribe while he was minister. He is also implicated in the Imedi TV case, in which he is charged with illegal appropriation of a television station and money laundering.

In the latter case, Kezerashvili is charged together with former Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava.

Kezerashvili was released on bail by a court in France in the beginning of February under condition that he wear an electronic bracelet and stay grounded at his home. The former minister was detained in France in October, 2013.

Kezerashvili said Thursday that he was pleased with the decision, but that it was as expected. He did not elaborate on his plans.
