Azerbaijan to chair Economic Cooperation Organization

Afghanistan has passed over chairmanship of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to Azerbaijan, News Azerbaijan cites the new Secretary General of the organization, Shamil Aleskerov, as saying.

Deputy Secretary General Aleskerov will replace Yahya Maroofi as the Secretary General of the organisation. He promised to focus on boosting integration and cooperation.

Baku will host an ECO summit in October 2012.

Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Turkmenistan are the ECO members. The organization was founded by Iran, Pakistan and Turkey in 1985. It became a UN observer in 1993 and an observer at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in 1994.
