Association for International Broadcasting voices concern for journalists in Azerbaijan

In a statement prompted by recent allegations of spying against investigative journalist Khadija Ismayilova, the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) expressed concern over her welfare.

“Azerbaijan has consistently created obstacles for journalists reporting from and within the country,” said AIB chief executive, Simon Spanswick. “AIB and its Members are concerned that Khadija Ismayilova is the subject of new charges that are without foundation. We call on the Azerbaijani authorities to drop the charges and allow Ms Ismayilova and all other journalists in the country to carry on their work free from intimidation and threats to their lives and those of their families.” 24.02.14 More

The Azerbaijanis that head to Syria to take part in military operations against government forces get financial support from Wahhabis and receive military training. Two more Azerbaijani citizens were reportedly killed in Syria, say the websites owned by the mujahideen, APA reports.

Azerbaijan invited to nuclear summit in Netherlands


President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has been invited to a nuclear security summit in the Netherlands.

Azerbaijani parliament speaker to visit Iran

Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Oqtay Asadov will participate at the ninth session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, to be held in Tehran on February 18-19, the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran told Trend today.

Meetings of some structures of the organisation will also be held in Tehran on the eve of the session.

The third Conference of Women Parliamentarians of the OIC member states is also planned to be held as part of the session. 03.02.14 More

CERN could help build data center in Azerbaijan

Hungary says it will help the country with data center construction as part of new ICT agreements.

CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) could be brought in to help the country of Azerbaijan build a new data center with a planned investment of €30 to 120m as part agreements signed by the country with Hungary.

CERN officially opened its second data center with the Wigner Research Center in Budapest for its scientific research in particle physics in June last year. 31.01.14 More

Azerbaijani religious figure arrested over protest against Iran-Armenia relations released

The famous Azerbaijani religious figure arrested over the protest against the expansion of Iran-Armenia relations has been released.

APA reports quoting Oyannews agency that Hojjat al-Islam Abdulaziz Azimi Gadim was released from the central prison in Tabriz on January 29 as term of his sentence expired.

Gadim was arrested during the protest against the relations between Iran’s Eastern Azerbaijan Province and Armenia in Maragheh, Iran on December 27, 2012. For some time the Azerbaijani activist was held at a unit of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and National Security in Tabriz. On February 10, 2013 he was sent to Tabriz prison and released advance on pawn on March 24. 30.01.14 More

Two more Azerbaijani fighters killed in Syria

Two more Azerbaijani citizens were killed in Syria, says the websites owned by the mujahideen, APA reports.

According to information, Gusar resident – Azerbaijani mujahid aka Seyfullah lezgi fighting in the terrorist group Jabhat al-Nusra (AL-Nusra Front) was killed by the Bashar al-Assad forces yesterday and 18-year old Nijat a few days ago.

Photo and name of Seyfullah lezgi haven’t been revealed. He has reportedly been injured several times in the battles. 22.01.14 More

7 Azerbaijani terrorists killed in Syria since the beginning of 2014

Another citizen of Azerbaijan killed in Syria. He took part in the fighting against government forces of Syria among the grouping of "Frente Al Nusra", the Azeri news agency "APA" reports referring to sites belonging to the rebels.

It is reported that the liquidated Azerbaijani terrorist was known as "Abu Zar-Azeri." He was killed by the troops of Bashar al-Assad in Hama province.

According to "APA", after the deteriorating situation in Syria, a group of Azerbaijani citizens, who had left for Syria, joined the fight in the different formations.

"Abu Zar-Azeri" has become the seventh of Azerbaijani terrorists killed in Syria last week. On January 4, the agency "APA" reported about the destruction of two Azerbaijani terrorists in Syria who were members of the "Frente al-Nusra" group Namik Asgarov and someone called Soltan known as "Azeri Seifullakh." On January 7, "APA" reported about the elimination of another Azerbaijani terrorist in Syria known as "Primorskii Muhammed." On January 9 "APA" also reported about elimination of Rahman Shikhaliyev in Syria from the "Islamic State of Iraq and Sham" group. On January 10 they reported about the death of a 14 year old Azerbaijani citizen Kerimov Najaf Namik oglu, and on January 11 about elimination of other terrorist from Azerbaijan - Samir Gahly. 17.01.14 More

Azerbaijan temporarily suspends gas supplies to Russia

Azerbaijan has temporarily suspended gas supplies to Russia because of repair operations on the Baku-Russian border road with gas transitions, SOCAR told Trend today.

The date of resumption is unknown.

Azerbaijani gas is supplied to Russia on the basis of the contract on the purchase and sale of Azerbaijani gas with a possibility of extension. The deal was signed between SOCAR and Gazprom in Baku on October 14, 2009. 15.01.14 More

Azerbaijan arrests head of independent vote monitor

Azerbaijani authorities have arrested the head of an independent election monitoring group after it criticized presidential polls that secured a new term for strongman Ilham Aliyev, one of his colleagues said Dec. 17.

Baku court on Dec. 16 ordered Anar Mammadli, chairman of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Center (EMDS), to spend three months in pre-trial detention in connection with an investigation into alleged tax evasion. “We were summoned to the prosecutor’s office as part of the investigation that was started in October,” EMDS executive director Bashir Suleymanli told Agence France-Presse. “I was let go two hours later and then the state-appointed lawyer called to say that Anar Mammadli had been arrested,” he said. 17.12.13 More

New report highlights lack of transparency in Azerbaijan's oil industry

A new report on Azerbaijan's oil industry documents how millions of dollars of revenue disappear into the hands of obscurely owned private companies with the apparent cooperation of the government-controlled state oil company. 

The report by the NGO Global Witness, presented in London on December 10, found a pattern in Azerbaijan's oil industry of partnering with shadowy companies that make hundreds of millions of dollars handling oil but whose business role remains unclear:

"Little-known private individuals, private companies, have been inserted into the oil industry of Azerbaijan, and nobody knows who these people are or why they have been included," says Tom Mayne, a lead researcher in the yearlong investigation. 11.12.13 More

A two-day seminar titled "Opinion Formers From Azerbaijan" has begun its work in NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Azerbaijani Defense Minister receives U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defense, Colonel General Zakir Hasanov received U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Eric Rubin.

The Defense Ministry’s press service told APA that the guest congratulated Zakir Hasanov on his appointment as defense minister and wished success in the future.

Azeri border guard killed in shootout on Iranian frontier

An Azerbaijani border guard has been killed in a firefight with unknown assailants along the ex-Soviet state's frontier with Iran, the border service said in a statement Monday.

The armed clash occurred Sunday in the southern Lankaran region when unidentified individuals illegally attempted to cross over the border from Iran, the statement said.

"As a result one border guard was killed and a further two were injured," the border service said. The latest incident follows the temporary closure last month of several crossings along the border of Iran and the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan following an alleged shooting incident. 02.12.13 More

Russia delivers large batch of Mi-35M helicopters to Azerbaijan


Russia has delivered a large batch of Mi-35M helicopters ordered by Azerbaijan in accordance with the schedule, “Rosoboronexport” company told APA at Dubai Airshow 2013 last week.

Currently, other helicopters are being produced and tested. Next batch of helicopters will be delivered to Azerbaijan soon. 26.11.13 More

Azerbaijan and Belarus sign several documents

Documents were signed between Azerbaijan and Belarus following the meeting between President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko with the participation of delegations.

First of all, Aliyev and Lukashenko signed "Joint Declaration of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Republic of Belarus”.

Baku to host Azerbaijan-Turkey high-level military dialogue

NATO expert group arrives in Baku

NATO's expert group on military education arrived in Baku on November 11.


According to Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry, the purpose of the visit is to provide assistance in some areas of military education to the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. At the meetings, the expert group discussed military education and personnel training with the Azerbaijani side. The visit will end on November 14. A NATO Days summit is held annually as part of the NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation, with the participation of the Headquarters of the Supreme Allied Command Transformation's (SACT) expert group and will be held by the Azerbaijan's Armed Forces on November 25-29. 12.12.13 More

Democracy Training Center harshly criticized presidential election: Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office conducts search

The Investigation Department of Grave Crimes of the General Prosecutor's Office of Azerbaijan filed a criminal case and carried out the first investigative steps concerning the Center for Monitoring of Elections and Democracy Training, reports the Azerbaijani portal "Haqqin.az."


Employees of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor General office started the search at 11.00 in Baku time at the Centre office in Baku. During the search, officers seized the financial statements of the Prosecutor General office and financial documents of the Centre, computers, press releases and other internal documents. The head of the Center Anar Mammadov has so far refused to comment on the case. 01.11.13 More

Pakistan's Intelligence agencies investigate secret calls to Azerbaijan

Intelligence agencies in Pakistan have started investigation into international calls worth Rs4.3 million in three days from a room in a plaza in Faqirabad, a source said. The calls were made to Azerbaijan, Germany, Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Israel, reports the News International.

According to the source, following a raid by the Federal Investigation Agency and police on the room, the intelligence agencies have also started investigation to find as to what kinds of calls were made from the 20 lines got for the single room. 28.10.13 More

New IMF Mission Chief appointed to Azerbaijan

"The International Monetary Fund (IMF), in consultation with the Government of Azerbaijan has appointed Mr. Raja Almarzoqi as new Mission Chief to Azerbaijan," Head of IMF Local Office in Baku Ms. Aghgun Gadirli told Trend on Thursday. Mr. Almarzoqi joined the Middle East and Central Asia Department of the Fund as Advisor in February 2012.

He brings a wealth of experience from his previous positions in the government, academia, and the private sector. Mr. Almarzoqi's extensive experience of oil exporting countries will be particularly relevant to his work on Azerbaijan. 24.08.12  More

Azerbaijan to chair Economic Cooperation Organization

Afghanistan has passed over chairmanship of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) to Azerbaijan, News Azerbaijan cites the new Secretary General of the organization, Shamil Aleskerov, as saying.

Deputy Secretary General Aleskerov will replace Yahya Maroofi as the Secretary General of the organisation. He promised to focus on boosting integration and cooperation. 14.08.12  More

Armenian view: "Azerbaijan: A country on brink of break up"

Azerbaijan is considered to be and is recognized as a “failed state” (International Research organization Fund for Peace, 2013). As it has been observed, recently the country has been experiencing deterioration and “failure” on political, economic as well as on societal levels. Increasing illegitimacy of the government, growing violations of human rights and rule of law, uneven economic development, strengthening of Islamic sentiments are all phenomena present or influencing Azerbaijan. Obviously all these issues have had and continue to have their impact on the society of Azerbaijan pushing it into depression and pulling in the direction of degradation; manifestations of which are suicides, unprecedented violence and radicalization.

At the beginning of 2014 in Azerbaijan no day passed without a lost life. The suicides have become one of the hottest topics of the media. According to Azerbaijani media already in the first month of 2014 almost 40 suicides were reported. The experts explain the rise of “tremendous wave of suicides” by economic hardships the society is experiencing, by lack of trust towards the state as well as the community and by the environment of lawlessness and impunity that exist in the country. 13.02.14 More

Supply of new radar sets to Azerbaijan for protection of offshore facilities

'Kelvin Hughes' company has announced that it will supply a total of 11 SharpEye™ radar sets for the protection of offshore facilities in Azerbaijan, according to a message posted on the company's website.

As part of VisSim's Marine Asset Protection and Surveillance System, Kelvin Hughes will be providing 10 SBS-800-1 (3.7m antenna) systems for offshore production platforms in the Caspian Sea, typically two radars per platform, and one SBS-800-2 (5.5m antenna) that will be installed onshore, the company said. 29.01.14 More

Azerbaijan to receive Boeing-787 Dreamliner aircrafts in 2014

According to preliminary data, Azerbaijani Airlines (AZAL) CJSC will receive the first Boeing-787 Dreamliner aircraft in summer 2014, a source at the CJSC told Trend on Jan.17.

Earlier, CJSC ordered two Boeing-787 Dreamliner aircrafts.

Azerbaijan and France ink document in defense sector

Azerbaijani and French Defense Ministries signed a technical agreement on cooperation in defense sector, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said. 
The document was signed during Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov's official visit to France, which started on January 13.

During the visit, Hasanov also held a series of meetings with the military leadership of France and heads of French companies producing defense products and discussed issues of bilateral cooperation during the meetings.

Hasanov's French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian expressed Paris`s interest in developing cooperation with Azerbaijan. Hasanov, in turn, noted the role of the presidents in developing relations between the two countries. 17.01.14 More

Agreement on military cooperation between Azerbaijan and the United States was extended for five years.

Chairman of Azerbaijani Parliament's Security and Defence Committee, Ziyafet Asgarov, who spoke at the committee's meeting held on Dec. 18, spoke about the draft laws on 'On the approval of the Agreement between the Defence Ministry of Azerbaijan Republic and U.S. Department of Defence (USA-AZE-02) on purchasing equipment and mutual service' and 'On making changes to the Charter of Garrison and Guard Services of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan'. 19.12.13 More

Azerbaijan prepares action plan for energy efficiency by 2021

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Industry and Energy is preparing a National Action Plan for Energy Efficiency covering the years 2014-2020, head of the investment department of the ministry, Ramiz Rzayev said at a conference on rational energy purchases in buildings belonging to the public sector on Dec.13.

Up to 40 per cent of energy resources consumed in Azerbaijan can be saved. That means the level of efficiency of energy use in the country is not yet at the desired level, Rzayev said. 13.12.13 More

Azerbaijan completes overhaul of railway as part of BTK project

Azerbaijan Railways has completed the overhaul of a 317 kilometre section of the railway on the Baku-Georgian border route, the company said on Dec.10.

Major repairs of 317 kilometers of Baku-Boyuk Kesik have been carried out as part of the State Program on development of the railway system in Azerbaijan in 2010-2014 by a 215 million euro loan allocated by the Czech Exim Bank. Works on overhaul of the railway started on June 10, 2011 from the 97 kilometers of the Aghstafa-Tatli railway stretch. 10.12.13 More

South Korea, Azerbaijan to improve bilateral defense ties

The expansion of military ties and cooperation in the defense industry was a key topic of meeting of the Azerbaijani and South Korean defense ministers. South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin and his Azerbaijani counterpart Zakir Hasanov met in Seoul, the Korean media reported on December 3. The two ministers signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at expanding defense cooperation between the two nations.

Hasanov's visit to South Korea started on December 2. During his three-day trip, Hasanov will also meet with South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman and the chief of the Defense Acquisition Administration Program to boost further cooperation in defense sectors. 03.12.13 More

Azerbaijan passes presidency of ECO to Iran

21st Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) was held in Tehran on November 24-26. The meeting brought together foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, Afghanistan, and Azerbaijan and representatives of Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov noted in his opening remarks that the Presidency of the ECO Council of Ministers was passed to Iran from Azerbaijan.

Speaking about ECO's recent achievements, Mammadyarov emphasized the development of regional integration.

"We are very pleased to observe that regional integration efforts are deepening in terms of increased trade and investment flows, commercial ties, and intra-regional transport infrastructure development," he said. "These are promising signs, but we need to build on them further and explore other mutual economic opportunities." 27.11.13 More

Azerbaijan jails 29 for plotting terror attacks

A court in Azerbaijan has sentenced three members of a group allegedly linked to al-Qaeda to life in prison, after convicting them of plotting attacks on President Ilham Aliyev and other targets in the Caspian Sea country.

On Monday, the court in capital Baku also sentenced 26 others to shorter prisoner terms, Reuters reported. 

The 29 defendants were arrested in April and May 2012. They were accused of plotting to kill President Aliyev and carry out bombing attacks at the site of the Eurovision contest in May 2012 and several hotels in Baku. More

Employee of Iranian culture center in Azerbaijan has been arrested and forced to leave within 48 hours

“Baku continues its policy of pressing the Iranian representatives,” the Iranian FARS news agency reports.

The report also says that Baku has violated the principles of the Vienne convention, it has arrested the representative of the cultural center of Iran to Azerbaijan for 3 hours and then has forced him to leave the country in 48 hours. 

Correspondent of FARS comments on the incident and notes, “Since 2011 Azerbaijan has forced 8 Iranian representatives with official passports to leave the country or has not allowed them to enter Azerbaijan. 25.11.13 More

Azerbaijani parliament approves draft state budget for 2014

Milli Majlis (parliament) of Azerbaijan has approved the draft state budget for 2014. Some 102 MPs voted for the draft state budget, while two MPs votes against it.

No changes have been made to the main parameters of the state budget for the next year after parliamentary discussions.

According to Azerbaijani Finance Minister Samir Sharifov, the income of the state budget for next year is forecasted at 18.384 billion manats (31.4 per cent of GDP forecasted for 2014) and expenses are projected at 20.063 billion manats (34.3 per cent of GDP). 22.11.13 More

Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Abdullah Gul yesterday viewed the Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. 
They first watched the flying performances of the "Hurkush" basic trainer aircraft and the "T129" attack helicopter from the control tower.

The Head of State was informed that Turkish Aircraft Industries Corporation (TUSAS) was established in 1973 under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Technology in order to reduce the foreign dependency in defense industry in Turkey.

With the decision of meeting the combat aircraft requirement of Turkish Air Force (TurAF) with F-16s, TUSAS Aerospace Industries, Inc. (TAI) was established by Turkish and US partners in 1984 for a period of 25 years with the aim of carrying out the manufacture, system integration and flight tests of F-16 that would be delivered to the TurAF. 13.11.13 More

Azerbaijan skips its term for BSEC Chairmanship-in-Office

“Next BSEC Chairmanship-in-Office will be taken by the Republic of Bulgaria in January 2014, as the Republic of Azerbaijan informed that it will skip its term,” BSEC Secretariat told APA.

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Mahmud Mammadguliyev explained to APA the reason of this decision: “Azerbaijan will preside over several structures next year, including the Council of Europe. New Defense Minister of Azerbaijan is a native of Armenia

Asker Hasanov, the father of the new Minister of Defense of Azerbaijan Zakir Hasanov, was born in Armenia, in the city of Echmiatsin, afterwards their family moved to Yerevan, where he lived for many years, newspaper "Yeni Musavat" found out as a result of its own investigation.

The newspaper began investigating the roots of the new minister, as soon as the media started to spread information that he is from Nakhijevan, despite the fact that in his official biography Astara was recorded as his birthplace. New US ambassador to leave for Azerbaijan after August 25

New US ambassador Richard L. Morningstar will leave for Azerbaijan after August 25, said on private event at USACC offices in Georgetown for the new United States ambassador to Azerbaijan Richard L. Morningstar.

The Ambassador touched upon the issues of energy security and cooperation in the Caspian Region, adding that the Southern Energy Corridor plays a vital role for Azerbaijan in terms of energy diversification. Azerbaijan bought 47 warplanes and 109 helicopters over last 10 years

Azerbaijan took important steps for strengthening the military airpark over the last 10 years.
 
As a result of researches conducted by APA on the basis of reports of the UN Register of Conventional Arms, in 2001-2011, Baku strengthened its aviation park with new  warplanes, combat helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles.
 
According to reports presented by the purchasing and selling countries, Azerbaijan bought 47  warplanes and 109 helicopters from various countries over the last 10 years. Azerbaijan included more than 30 unmanned aerial vehicles to the armament of the Armed Forces. 13.08.12  More

Azerbaijan preparing to carry out direct flights to U.S.

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) intends to open regular flights to the U.S. in the summer of 2013, head of the State Administration of Civil Aviation Arif Mammadov said in an interview on Tuesday.

Azerbaijan to host seven radar stations to combat smuggling

Seven radar stations will be sited along Azerbaijan’s Caspian Sea coast, the U.S. Department of State said in its country report on terrorism for 2011.
 
According to the report, Azerbaijan actively opposed terrorist organizations seeking to move people, money, and material through the Caucasus, the report on the U.S. Department of State's website says.

"Government law enforcement bodies pursued suspected terrorist groups and facilitators operating in Azerbaijan and implemented measures to strengthen border security and maritime domain awareness. The Government of Azerbaijan completed the modernization of its Central Reference Laboratory, a state-of-the-art biosafety facility that will make joint research on potential bioterrorism threats possible," the report says. 01.08.12  More
